Green Campus; refers to a campus that implements the concept of sustainability based on the environment, aims for zero carbon emissions, supports and implements the use of renewable energy sources, considers the environment in the use of natural resources, has established recycling-based waste management systems, and prioritizes the environment and human health.
Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University is a university that carries out activities in line with the green campus approach across its entire Central Taşlıçiftlik Campus and other campuses. Based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, work is being carried out and activities are being held on our campuses with the aim of ensuring social, economic, and ecological sustainability.
SUSTAINABLE TOGU
Since its establishment, Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University has followed methods compatible with the ecological conditions of the region in its management strategies and has contributed to ensuring environmental, social, and economic sustainability. As an institution, our university embraces sustainability in the areas of energy, waste, water, infrastructure, and education research. Through its research, social contribution activities, and relationships with external stakeholders, it supports the sustainable development of our region and the province of Tokat. Our central and district campuses are developed with a planning and management approach that prioritizes ecology from a sustainability perspective, targets zero carbon emissions, supports and implements the use of renewable energy sources, considers the environment in the use of natural resources, implements recycling-based waste management systems, and prioritizes environmental and human health. In our campus settlements, planning and strategies with a high density of green areas have been implemented, taking advantage of the richness of our region's ecosystem and the vastness of the campus lands.
Our university implements practices that contribute to environmental sustainability in the areas of energy, water, and waste management. In particular, significant projects have been implemented at TOGÜ in recent years in the field of energy production. The TOGÜ Solar Power Plant (GES), located on our university grounds, meets a large portion of our central campus's electricity needs, especially during the summer months. Furthermore, within the scope of the “Project for Universities Specializing in Priority Areas” by the Council of Higher Education, the “Research Universities Support Program” (ADEP) was launched, and our university received the “University Specializing in Energy Storage” certificate under the “Project for Universities Specializing in Priority Areas.”
Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University implements a recycling and waste reduction program through its “Zero Waste Project.” Measures are being taken to protect and efficiently use natural resources, and the zero waste project is being implemented in all units. Waste (packaging waste, electronic waste, batteries, vegetable oil, etc.) is collected separately and sent to recycling facilities, and food waste is sent to animal shelters. The Compost Production Facility located on our university's main campus is also an important part of our zero waste project. At this facility, organic waste generated on campus is converted into compost and recycled. The natural water sources within the campus are directed to our university's Trout Production Facility to ensure efficient water use and are subsequently transferred to the DSİ canal located on campus grounds.
TOGÜ, which continues its activities by adopting a sustainability approach, also demonstrates its achievements in international rankings in this field. In the 2024 International Green Metric University Sustainability Ranking, it ranked 22nd among Turkish universities and 256th among universities worldwide. Developing the quantity and quality of sustainability-related practices in the coming years and maintaining our national and international successes are among the main goals of our university.
